Revolution will need regulation

If nothing else the government’s long-awaited White Paper on the future regulation of the legal profession has proved that ministers mean business when it comes to reform. The paper – which will form the basis of a bill with legislation forecast to be implemented in probably a couple of years’ time – follows on the heels of the review by Sir David Clementi, which recommended the creation of legal disciplinary practices. In theory, they would have effectively allowed lawyers of various types to join in partnerships. And there was potentially scope for non-legally qualified professionals employed by law firms to take a seat at the top table.
